I consider myself very lucky that bedtime has never been a traumatic experience in my house. My daughter has always been super easy to put to bed. I think it’s because she’s always woke up early and played hard all day so by late evening/early night, she was exhausted. But that’s most certainly not always the case. I have kept other children that will fight and fight to stay awake (which isn’t a pleasant experience for anyone involved).

Shushybye Sleepover Surprise is a book and cd that seeks to make bedtime a little easier. If you’ve never heard of the Shushybye books or television program, Shushybye is a place where dreams are built. This particular story is about Leo and Leona staying the night with their grandmother. As they go to sleep they each make wishes about Shushy adventures they want to go on in their dreams. Their wishes are carried away to Shushybye via two stars. When Snoozles (a Shushy) heard about their wishes, he used a magic want to go to their room and brought back Leo, Leona, and their grandmother to Shushybye. Then the trio along with the Shushy’s went to a concert for a grand adventure.

What is so neat about this book is that it comes with a read-along cd that reads this great book to your child and also has three Shushybye songs on it. This is the perfect bedtime treat so that kids will stay in bed and slowly be lulled to sleep as they are entranced and therefore still. In addition to the Shushybye books, you can also purchase the Close Your Eyes music cd that is made up of some great songs that your kids are sure to love. These are not slow put you to sleep songs, but they do seem to engage the kiddos that come in and out of my house, and I’ve found the first (and maybe most important) step to getting kids to sleep is just getting them to stay in bed and be still. This cd does that. My daughter has even asked me to convert it to mp3 format so she can put it on her iPod.

The cover of the book also glows in the dark which was a big hit in my house as that made it so cool. Shh! Don’t tell, but I was kind of impressed with this as well.

Shushybye: Sleepover Surprise was written by Steve Syatt and illustrated by Frank Caruso. You can purchase this book from Amazon for $9.31. You can also find some other great Shushybye products there for pretty good prices. You can also buy merchandise directly on the Shushybye website.

Shushybye is also a television series that you can watch on BabyFirstTV and Comcast Video on Demand (unfortunately I don’t get those channels so I can’t tell you much about the show).

If you have a child between the ages of 6 and 13, you might want to check out this contest from Buddig. Two hundred winners will be selected each week to win a new Scholastic book (value: $10). There are also 3 $1,000 scholarships to be given away.

How to Enter

You will select your child’s age, and they will be given an ebook to read and then answer a few questions about (Answers to the multiple choice questions do not need to be correct for entry.) . For my 11 year old, we received a book called The Bad Luck Play by Janet Lorimer. It was 32 pages of fairly large font, and we had to answer 3 questions. In addition to the 3 to 5 multiple choice questions, there is one “essay” question. The answer (from your child) should be between 250 and 500 characters.

Limit one (1) Entry per person throughout the Contest Period. No more than 25,000 Entries will be accepted for inclusion in the Contest. Of these 1,200 will win! That’s not bad odds.

The essay is used for the scholarship and will ultimately be voted on to determine the winners.

Contest begins, today, June 14th and ends July 25th.

As I mentioned previously, there’s an exciting new book series and online world for little girls on the horizon – The Fairy Godmother Academy. My daughter loves to read. I would hate to calculate what we spend on books in the average year.

Our newest book arrived yesterday, and I’m happy to say it was free. Yesterday we received a Fairy Godmother’s Party Pack that included the first book in the series (Birdie’s Book), iron on transfers for the girls at the party to make their own Fairy Godmother’s shirts, a music CD, handouts for the girls to research their lineage (I’m thinking pre-party – maybe of sending these with the invitations), wisdom cards, stickers, and then a nice customizable book for recording everyone’s lineage.

As I stated, I just received this party pack yesterday. I’ve just started the book so I can’t tell you much about it yet, but will come back and post a more thorough review after I finish it. However, I have great news for you. The company has been generous enough to not only offer my daughter a party pack, but also a party pack for one lucky reader! This contest will be a live contest.

Review & Giveaway: The Unexpected Gift

When I was asked if I would like to read/review/giveaway The Unexpected Gift by Meaghan Gonzales Wagar and Michelle Bulmer Atha, I clicked over and read the summary and knew from the beginning that I would love this book. And I have to admit that I was not disappointed. It’s a thin book so I chunked it in my carryon bag when I was leaving for Blogher thinking it would be nice to have something lightweight to add to my bag. I arrived at the airport super early Thursday so I pulled it out and started reading. I was so involved that time flew while I waited on my plane.

As soon as I loaded on the plane, I pulled it back out, anxious to see what happened next. By the time the plane landed, I only had two chapters left to read. The book is about two remarkable women. The first is a recently divorced wife and mother who is looking to find herself and raise her children alone. Still loving her husband ex-husband makes this a challenging road. She’s also now needing to make her entrance back into the full time work world. The second woman is a young pregnant girl living in poverty, but working hard to make a better life for herself. The two meet by chance when the divorcee donates baby clothes to the young girl. After a couple more chance meetings, they start to build a friendship that becomes quite strong and helps each of the women become strong and conquer the issues in their lives.

I’ve been both of these women to some degree – the young pregnant girl without much money (though my life was much easier than the girl in this book) and the single mom trying to raise her children so I felt so connected to each of them as I read it.

The design is done. I’ve decided the first few books I want to read and write about so there’s only one thing left to do – we have to have a Grand Opening Party. Yes you heard me correctly – we’re going to have a book party. There will be prizes for both adults and kids and maybe even one for teens (I’m working with a special sponsor and hoping things will work out).

This party will last a week long March 14 to 21st and it promises to be lots of fun. Stay tuned. We’ll start with some early posts between now and then, but after that week, we’ll be posting in full swing.

What books can you expect to be reviewed? In addition to new books that I read, I’m going to go back and reread The Women’s Murder Club and Janet Evanovich’s books about Stephanie Plum so that I can post reviews of this series from the beginning as they are two that I think almost every woman will enjoy. In addition, I’m going to be reading some young adult literature and “classic” literature.
